Welcome to volunteering with the Art Gallery of Ontario! Volunteers help the AGO bring art and people together by generously giving their passion, energy and expertise.

Section 2: Area of Interest

After reading the brief description and commitment required, please check your area(s) of interest.

Gallery Volunteers

Welcomes and encourages visitor interaction with the Gallery and collection. One four hour shift per week plus regular training/departmental meetings.

Working with Family Programs Education Officers in Off The Wall, a hands-on activity area for children to assist with delivery of activities. One four hour shift per week plus regular training/departmental meetings.

Engages visitors in an exploration of historical life in the Grange (original home of the Art Gallery) through a presentation of prepared research. One four hour shift per week plus regular training/departmental meetings.

Retail Volunteers

Assist members and the public with the selection of original Canadian contemporary art for rental or purchase. One four shift per week plus regularly scheduled meetings.

Provides gift wrapping in the Retail Shop during for special holidays or events. Shifts vary.

Outreach Volunteers

Engages the public through art-related questions at various events to maintain community presence for the Gallery.

Support Travel AGO trip sales and service by planning and leading (day-trip) art-oriented tours.

Resource Centre Volunteers

Welcoming, providing directional guidance and introducing materials to AGO staff, volunteers and members as well as Gallery visitors, collectors and academics.

Supporting staff in providing programs ie. monitor classes, tours, special events, open houses, and study room visitors. Youth Volunteer Opportunities

Education Programming Volunteers

Assist Art Camp Counsellors in delivering a day camp program to kids aged 6 to 13 years.

Working with Family Programs Education Officers to assist in the delivery of program activities for children.

Working with Family Programs Education Officers in Off The Wall, a hands-on activity area for children to assist with delivery of activities.

Assisting with activities, setting up stations, helping with cleanup, greeting visitors, helping people find their way.

Working with AGO staff, a youth advisory council develops artistic projects, events and programs at the AGO. Council Members receive training in meeting facilitation, group decision making, committee development and event planning. They meet and work side by side with gallery staff and learn the concerns and procedures of a large public institution while gaining exposure to a variety of potential careers. 10-15 Youth Council Members are selected from across the GTA. Participation in the AGO Youth Council is a minimum commitment of 4 hours/week for one year.
